Professor A.L.I. feat. Chee Malabar - Dalit

Dalit is a song off of Professor A.L.I.'s Emerald Manifesto LP and features Chee Malabar. The song and video are attempts to utilize the language of Hip-Hop to educate masses about the social and class inequities that exist in the Indian Subcontinent.

"Dalit" which comes from the root meaning broken or crushed is the more civil, self-defining term of the Dalit peoples. Often referred to as Untouchables, Harijan or even Scheduled Caste, these terms are derogatory monickers which place the Dalits perpetually at the bottom of the social ladder.

They are subject to abuse of the worst kind, and their voices and cause is all but muted as far as the global dialogue against oppression is concerned.

This song is an attempt by Professor A.L.I. who is part ethnically Tamil and Chee Malabar, also with South Asian roots, to shed light on the horrible abuse that occurs in the subcontinent.

The video made up of a collage of graphic news footage is used for educational purposes to outline the suffering of the Dalit people by Professor A.L.I. as a part of the courses he teaches. This video and song were not made to inure profit.
